Eccentric? Yep. Genius? Oh my! With two brilliant New York-related albums during the year, Bill Whitten's mighty triumphal procession continues, and hopefully reaches a very well-deserved audience. In Fokus Musik's Christmas calendar, he talks about his 2025 and expectations for 2026.
How was your 2025?
– 2025 was great! My kids are doing well, we have food and shelter and books. And my albums Telepaths and My Life in Cinema were released, or re-released.
What is your favorite album from this year?
– Unfortunately, for the purposes of this list, I haven’t heard any music made in 2025. I did often listen to Beethoven’s late string quartets, Heldon (Richard Pinhas), Ryuichi Sakamoto (80s period), David Sylvian from the 80s, Robyn Hitchcock’s I Often Dream of Trains, JD Emmanuel, Telepath, Nmesh, Corp, Haruomi Hosono and Chuck Berry.
I rewatched many Jean-Luc Godard films: Prénom Carmen, Every Man for Himself, Detective and so on. I read many books by Friedrich Kittler, Simone Weil, Roberto Calasso, Guy de Maupassant, Jean Genet, Fleur Jaeggy, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. I bought a fantastic book that was published in 2025: Giorgio Agamben’s Self Portrait in the Studio.
What are you looking forward to in 2026?
– I am looking forward to 2026, when more music by William Carlos Whitten is expected to be released, an EP with the working title I Will Save You From the 21st Century and an album called Music for a Doomed Society.
